The war is over, but the disoriented Col.
Culpepper fights on for the Confederacy. The
colonel’s daughter, Aura Lee, must come up with
the cash to replant the cotton crop. She turns
Magnolia Plantation into an inn. The first
guests are Beauregard Mason-Dixon and his snobbish
mother. Aura Lee and Beauregard fall in love
under the approving eye of his mama, who believes Aura
Lee to be wealthy. Enter the villain, Horton
Smedley, who has been tossed off a riverboat.
When Mrs. Mason-Dixon learns the truth about the
Culpeppers’ financial situation and Beauregard
discovers that Smedley has been "trifling"
with his mother’s affections, his own evil
ends. A surprise ending straightens everything
out, proving that virtue and love triumph over
villainy!
The entire action of the play takes place in the
drawing room of Magnolia Plantation. The year is
1870. The Civil War has been over for five
years. It is easy to see that in its glory,
Magnolia was a magnificent place, but the years of war
have taken their toll. The plabntation is in
Mississippi on the banks of the Mississippi River.
