The CLOC's
clock is ticking down for the Cloudcroft Light Opera
Company's actors to hit the road for dinner, drama and death.
Be Bopped at the Sock Hop is the
infamous company's latest murder mystery, slated for one
performance only at Alamogordo High School. The March 8
presentation starts at 6:30 p.m. at the AHS cafeteria. All
proceeds will benefit the Tiger Band. Cost is just $20 for
the dinner and show.
The time is the 1950s. Rock and roll
is young and loud, and played on 45 rpm vinyl that vibrates
radio and phonograph speakers all over the country. The
singers who belt out the tunes wildly gyrate to the beat. The
disc-jockeys who play the songs make and break records. They
also make and break careers. What happens when your Top 40
track is no longer in the groove, and dies on the charts?
AHS grad Paula Hilton (1973) penned
the script, not the first time CLOC has performed her works.
Jennifer Ridley directs. Additional AHS alums taking part
include: Zack Miller, Heather Smith and Tony Calderon.
As the tale opens, a sock hop's
scheduled. The DJ thinks he's hot. He's not. But singer
Melvin Delvis, an Elvis entertainer, is, and the proof is in
his female fans' swooning. Good golly, Miss Molly, will the
green monster that is jealousy thwart Melvin's next gold
record? Will Johnny not be so good? Who gets all shook up?
Plan to attend and find out which characters rock around the
CLOC.
"It is really hard to describe
the warm fuzzies I have know MY show is being performed for
the Tiger Band's fundraiser," Hilton said. "I am so
honored, and I appreciate CLOC continuing to choose my
scripts for their productions."
Murder mysteries are no stranger to
CLOC. The Spring 2012 event at Cloudcroft High School drew a
full house for the dinner and drama. As with all such
performances, diners are not just on-lookers. The wall
between actors and audience . well, it just doesn't
exist.
CLOC meets the first Wednesday of every
month at 6 p.m., at Dave's on the famous Cloudcroft
boardwalk. If you've a hankerin' to do a show or just show
off, come join the fun. Melodramas for 2014 are planned
throughout the summer at the Zenith Park Pavilion. And, if
you're a murder mystery groupie, the next one takes the stage
around Halloween, at the Cloudcroft schools. It should be
quite a monster mash.
