DIRECTOR'S NOTES

Coming to the CLOC stage on May 27th, 28th, 29th, and June 3rd and 4th, "The Hustle" - a story of what might have happened if Jane Austen's "Pride and Prejudice" had taken place at the end of the 19th Century in the old west ... in melodramatic form where Characters are odd and the story, non sensible.

Honoria Nomer, Miss Nomer, is the embodiment of all that is good and honorable. Tired of the simple life in a dusty, small town, she dreams of grander things. When the stage makes an unscheduled stop in town, it deposits two strangers, the widow, Frau Heidi Deloot, and a wealthy business man, Duhdisco Kyde.

Duhdisco quickly hustles into Honoria's heart. It seems as if her prayers may be answered. Why would she settle for a life with the sweet, simple, local Marshall, Marshall Marshall, when she could be the mistress of a fine California mansion?

Her devoted mother is determined to see her three daughters, the Miss Nomers, Honoria, Prudence, and Perky, married well, so she encourages the attachment - much to the chagrin of the family patriarch, Mr. Homer Nomer, and, perhaps, to the family's peril.

Will Honoria and Duhdisco make their life and fortune in California? Will the smitten Deputy Doo Daugh get her man?  Will Prudence  and Perky follow in their sister's path to riches  Who is ghood?  Who is Evil?  What would Jane Austen say?

PRESIDENT'S RAMBLINGS

I am in the humble position to be president of this organization as we celebrate our historic 25th anniversary. I recently found a program from 2000 with a message I'd like to share - "The organization, generally referred to as CLOC, as formed in 1991, and performed its first melodrama on the back porch of the Chamber of Commerce building at Christmas of that year. For two years, the Christmas play was the only petiotmence." Today, CLOC has grown to have 17 melodrama performances, 6 scholarships and an annual murder mystery at Cloudcroft High School.

This year we added a sixth scholarship in memory of Gary Wood, who passed away earlier this year and provided costumes for years which added to the success of CLOC. The scholarship was won by Scotty Courvoisier, who grew up on the stage and is headed to Harvard University. I believe Gary would be honored to have Scotty be the first recipient of a scholarship in his honor. If you've been coming to our little Pavilion for performances over the years, you might have noticed some new changes. The new sign out front and the new paint in the restrooms were done by our Village Maintenance Crew; the new lights overhead were provided by Cloudcroft Schools, the Otero County Electric Cooperative and ERM Electric; and the new walkway was made possible by a grant from the Co-op, a donation from The Cloudcroft Directory and the work of Jeremy Adams and his crew. Additional plans include new carpet for the stage and roll up doors on the other side of the Pavilion so we can possibly have some winter productions.

I also want to thank a CLOC "elder" for her outstanding work. Marty Ware has served as our web mistress for the past 16 years. She attended productions, rehearsals, murder mysteries and parades taking photos, filming video and promoting us via the web well before social media or phones had cameras. Thanks so much Marty. The hat pass at intermission is used to cover royalties, expenses - which don't include acting lessons - and our scholarships. So when the hat comes around, please dig deep. I want to remind everyone this show is interactive. It is acceptable to boo the villains, cheer the heroes and yell at the characters on stage. It is also permissible for them to yell back at you. So be prepared. We hope you enjoy the performance, and will make it an annual event. We appreciate you letting us entertain you over the last 25 years. Now sit back and "leave the drama to us!"

ARLAN PONDER, President
